Trapdoor spiders can grow up to 4 inches. Like all spiders they have 8 eyes. They are non poisonous but have powerful jaws and large fangs.Their appearance looks similar to the funnel-web spider. The two main differences are that funnel-web spiders are very poisonous and their burrows are coated with webs on the inside. Most trapdoor spiders are found in Africa, North America, South America, and Japan. They come in a variety of colors like yellow, dark red and black. The animals they like to prey on are insects, young snakes/ birds, and small fish. These aggressive spiders are also prey themselves. Larger birds, scorpions, centipedes and wasps like to prey on them. Wasps are the spiders number one worry other than humans. Wasps try to make their way into it's burrow and once they do they sting the spider.
What is interesting about these spiders is that they don't make webs, instead they make burrows underground. When a young trapdoor spider outgrows it's burrow it makes a new one. |
